Do You Wanna Be My Friend?

Do You Wanna Be My Friend?

So I woke up feeling older cause last night I lost a fistfight with a ghost
he had moves I never seen before said he learned ’em out on the coast
if you think that I’m a fool you may be right but it always hurts the most
when the love you’re counting on is the source of the lethal dose
when I was a little boy my Daddy sat me on his knee
and say “son you just might make it…if you do the opposite of me…”
then he laughed and put a record on I think it was “Let it Be….”
songs about the war and other things that I’d never have to see

Here and there / this and that / now and again
don’t know where / smell a rat / wanna be my friend?
wanna be my friend?

There’s a price to pay for everything I learned that the day I went broke
she took the credit cards and the rock and roll left me the blues and the folk
so I spend my day with trembling hands trying to light up a smoke
that I bummed off my mother who always seems to get the joke
when the circus comes to town I set up shop in my head
stitching up the big top with just this needle and thread
keep the riff-raff out…that’s what my doctor always said
tonight I got me lots of room in this motel bed

Here and there / this and that / now and again
don’t know where / smell a rat / wanna be my friend?
wanna be my friend?

Railroads and airports and the Pennsylvania turnpike in the rain
Mile marker 72 determined to cause me pain
when he asks me “where’s the fire” it takes all my love in vain
to not pour water on my head and say “well sir….there it goes again”
my eyelids are like razors when I lay myself down to sleep
Someone said one time “son, maybe it’s the company you keep”
but caution is boredom and both of ’em come so cheap
I never met a learning curve that someone didn’t call too steep

Here and there / this and that / now and again
don’t know where / smell a rat / wanna be my friend?
wanna be my friend?

TV droning in the background in case I wanna live the other way
Legal pad on the table in case I think of something to say
wanna be a regular at a bar where pretty girls rue the day
they passed judgement on an awkward kid and forwarded the dossier
Tonight I wanna smash my guitar and grab a long neck and say “fairly well”
put my own kid on my knee and tell him “oh the stories I could tell..”
but worlds can collide the debris…upon that we dwell
so I think I’m gonna shut down and treat myself for a spell

Here and there / this and that / now and again
don’t know where / smell a rat / wanna be my friend?
wanna be my friend?
